How Can We Overcome Hispanic Underrepresentation in Tech

Despite being one of the most technically advanced nations, the digital divide in America is sadly thriving, and minorities such as Hispanics fall victim to it. Our community still faces a lack of access to resources, such as the internet, devices, and digital skills, leading to an underrepresentation in tech.

Fortunately, there are steps that are being taken to overcome this disproportionate representation, and in this article, I’ll share some of the most effective ones and explore the future we may soon see.

Let’s get right into it.

Make Internet Access Easier

The internet is the foundation of modern applications such as online education and remote work. By making internet access easier for Hispanics, it can become easier for them to navigate both these applications.

However, many Hispanic families face language barriers, limiting their ability to get an internet connection.

Luckily, internet providers, such as my provider, Spectrum, are actively addressing the unique needs of Hispanic families. They make it easier for Hispanic families to set up an internet connection by offering bilingual customer service in Spanish through Spectrum servicio al cliente.

Launch Education Initiatives

Many Hispanic students lack access to basic computer science courses even in high school. In fact, Hispanic students are 1.4 times less likely than white and Asian students to enroll in computer science courses. Initiatives to raise awareness among these students and bridge this gap need to be launched.

This can be done through growing early exposure to STEM in K-12 public schools, as this will help develop interest and the confidence needed to pursue tech careers.

Additionally, expanding postsecondary education opportunities can also be effective. Many community colleges and universities offer Hispanic students financial aid and pathways to 4-year institutions offering STEM education.

Provide Workplace Support and Advancement

At the workplace level, Hispanic individuals in tech face problems such as limited career progression opportunities, isolation, stereotypes, and a lack of workplace belonging and acceptance.

Luckily, a lot can be done to support Hispanic individuals to progress within their careers and establish themselves as industry leaders.

The first step is to make hiring and retention practices more inclusive. This will involve revising outreach policies, conducting fair and unbiased interviews, and setting policies to report and resolve discrimination in the workplace.

Companies may also need to create a more inclusive culture by creating employee resource groups where Hispanic employees can support, network, and advocate for others. Finally, to support career progression for Hispanic workers, companies may need to create programs that can prepare them for management and executive-level roles.

Collaborate Within the Industry

Tech companies can team up with each other as well as with government organizations and educational institutes to create a full-scale support system for both students and workers.

Through these collaborations, they can increase public and private investment to fund innovation hubs, accelerator programs, or other initiatives that highlight Hispanic tech professionals. Of course, it will also require companies to collect data to guide their decisions, track progress, and improve as needed.

Government organizations may also need to monitor and hold organizations accountable based on their ability to achieve diversity goals within a certain time. This government intervention can create a more diverse workplace, allowing Hispanic individuals and others to highlight their expertise in key tech areas, and can also result in international collaborations with organizations in Hispanic areas.

Create Community & Professional Networks

This can be done at various stages, from education to workplaces. Companies and educational institutions can collaborate with Hispanic role models to educate and inspire both the next generation of Hispanic tech workers as well as current employees.

These role models can mentor and provide resources to individuals in need.

However, to do this, support and funding for Hispanic community organizations are needed. Government organizations need to empower local Hispanic organizations by providing them with the resources needed to support learners, host events featuring Hispanic role models, and build pathways for careers in tech.

Government organizations may also have to devise policies that support industry-relevant internships, apprenticeships, and accelerator programs.

The Future of Hispanic Representation In Tech

The steps being taken above are leading us to a more diverse and equitable future, where everyone has an equal shot at success in the tech industry, whether it be at the educational level or the workplace level.

The results of these efforts have already begun to show effect, and the numbers help back this up. For example, the number of engineering master’s degrees awarded to Hispanic students grew by 37%, whereas doctoral engineering enrollment grew by 50% between 2012 and 2022.

Additionally, Hispanic software developers have doubled between 2013 and 2023 in major cities such as Baltimore, Pittsburgh, DC, and Atlanta, to name a few.

Even at the workplace level, Hispanic participation in more hands-on roles in technologies such as artificial intelligence also grew from 48.7% to 58.7% between 2018 and 2022, according to a 2024 Latino Donor Collaborative report.

Last but not least, the up-and-coming generations of Hispanic youth are also more tech savvy, and this early exposure to digital devices and platforms can potentially spark their interest in educating and pursuing a career in tech fields, leading us to move beyond the limited roles we’ve been confined to.
